The Black Ebony Hairpin draws its form from the traditional Chinese chai (钗), a hair ornament worn in China for over two thousand years. Its gently curved prongs follow the shape of the hair, securing a bun or twist with a single gesture.
Crafted from black ebony and carefully polished to a smooth finish, the wood reveals a deep natural tone and subtle grain. With time and wear, the surface gradually develops a richer sheen and character, becoming more beautiful the more it is used.
An emerald-green ping’an kou (平安扣) completes the piece. Traditionally associated with peace, safety and well-being, it carries a wish for good things to accompany the person who wears it.

- Each piece is polished by hand, without lacquer or coating, preserving the natural colour and character of the wood.
- As a natural material, ebony may show variations in colour, grain and small pores.
- A slight transfer of natural wood pigment when wiping is normal.
- Occasionally, a fine white, frost-like residue may appear on the surface, particularly when newly crafted wood is stored in an enclosed space. This is a natural characteristic of the wood and can be gently removed with a soft, dry cloth.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to water, direct sunlight and excessive heat.
- Keep away from alcohol, disinfectants and harsh chemicals, which may damage the natural wood.
- Handle with care to avoid scratches, drops and contact with hard surfaces.
- Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth. Regular use and handling can help the wood develop a richer natural sheen over time.
