Jingdezhen

Jingdezhen, the “Porcelain Capital” of China, has shaped ceramic craftsmanship for over a thousand years. Since the Song dynasty, its mastery of form and precision has defined the highest standards of porcelain. The town’s clay, valued for its purity and strength, together with its time-honoured kilns, provides ideal conditions for creating tableware that is both refined and durable. The skilled artisans, bringing a lifetime of experience to each piece, ensure the authenticity and quiet excellence that define our work.

Material

Sourced from Jingdezhen, our tableware begins with the region’s natural resources: pure white kaolin clay and petuntse (pottery stone). When combined, these two materials create the ideal porcelain body: kaolin provides plasticity and a pure white hue, while petuntse lends structural strength and translucency after firing. This combination gives our tableware its distinctive smoothness and resilience, ensuring it can withstand the demands of daily use while maintaining its elegant appearance.

Craftmanship

Each Sols piece is formed using traditional Jingdezhen methods, mostly shaped by hand on the wheel rather than with moulds. This approach allows the artisan to respond intuitively to the clay, guiding its form with precision and care. A defining stage of this process is thinning and collaring — refining the walls to achieve lightness while preserving strength and balance. This technique demands years of experience and a deep sensitivity to the clay’s behaviour in motion and its response to heat. As our world is gradually being replaced by machines, those techniques are on the brink of extinction. We take immense pride in working alongside these artisans, preserving these traditions and supporting the artisans who uphold them.
